Labuan

There is a little part of Malaysia that has not managed to catch the eye of the prospective tourist. There is a little Tropical Island called Labuan situated off the Coast of Sabah and at the mouth of Brunei Bay that has missed the far reaching tourist and remains unfulfilled as a place to go and as a destination that must be visited. At the weekends the place does gain a sense of proportion as day trippers and over nighters from nearby Brunei swarm in for the cheaper goods but during the week it is empty. From Monday to Friday when far flung tourists should be swarming in for sun, sea and shopping the place remains bare, silent and bypassed, a tribute to what could be but is not.

Surrounded by coral reefs and secluded white sandy beaches, Labuan comprises six Islands covering 98Km Sq. full of lush tropical flora and fauna. Lying 8km offshore and accessed by frequent and high speed ferries, Labuan is inhabited by a diverse, stimulating and cosmopolitan society. Malaysia designated the Islands an offshore financial center, a duty free port and tourist destination, designed with such in mind as an intended jewel of the crown for Malaysia.

Singapore Shopping

What does a shopper want? A new set of expensive China, a business suit made in a day, the latest in fashion or the cheapest copy watch available, a personal computer or mini-digital camera, Sting Ray, Dimsum or Steak. It is all in Singapore, all readily available easy to find and depending on which country a traveler comes from not that expensive or prohibitive.

Singapore is a shopping paradise and if prior knowledge is obtained even better. By asking friends and relatives, by extracting nuggets from those who have been before, by reading guidebooks and searching the web a good stack of ideas and ‘wants’ can be stored for the actual trip. A shopping trip to Singapore will be a nightmare, expensive and fruitless if no research is done and no details are sought prior to going – although this article should help.

The New Taiwan Spirit in Turmoil

Cebrena holds my arm as I scurry to keep up with her, Leah, and their three friends’ scuttling bodies amidst a huge crowd. I am following Leah’s bright red jacket. We channel a path through the crowds of plastic-coated bodies swinging flags of the Republic of China in their fists – Taiwan’s flag, not to be mistaken for the People’s Republic of China. It is a misty Thursday in Taipei, and hundreds are gathered at the Palace to protest the presidential election of 2004. We hurry through the crowd; I catch a faint smell of incense lingering overhead a moment, as if ensconced in the general Taipei air.

This is only my fifth week in Taiwan, and it feels like a bomb has been dropped. That may be insensitive to say, since the international news headlines are filled with stories on the presidential debate in Taiwan, concurrently with reports on the Middle East, where bombs have been killing for years, and now Europe. I am blessed as a fortunate traveler. I am caught up in a political hotbed of warring visions, rather than actual figures.
